Code of accepted farming practice for the welfare of deer
This Victorian Department of Primary Industries Agriculture Note was written by the Bureau of Animal Welfare in August 1997. "This code assumes that, whatever the form of husbandry, managers have a duty to care for the welfare of the animals under their control, and that this care should be separate from the interests of production".

Model Code of Practice for the Welfare of Animals: The Farming of Deer
Full text of Standing Committee of Agriculture and Resource Management (SCARM) Report No. 66 published by the CSIRO. The report contains sections covering food and water, protection from climatic extremes, predation, disease and injury, accomodation, handling, transportation, and humane destruction. The report is in .pdf format and a little slow to download.

This web page presented by the Western College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Saskatchewan, Canada provides links to web pages discussing deer diseases. Some of the diseases covered include Tuberculosis, Johne's Disease, Chronic Wasting Disease, and Brainworm.

A Review of the Diseases and Parasites of Farmed Cervids
Abstracted by Brian Tapscott, Alternative Livestock Specialist, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs this paper discusses bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic diseases of deer. It provides brief notes on the species affected, overall risk, endemicity, and mitigation for each disease.

AUSVETPLAN: Disease strategies
"AUSVETPLAN is a series of technical response plans that describe the proposed Australian approach to an exotic disease incursion". These are published for a series of diseases on the Animal Health Australia website. The plans provide details of the nature of the disease and principles of control and eradication.

AHA: Johne's Disease
Part of the Animal Health Australia website. The site gives information about the diagnosis, management and control of Johne's disease and details of Johne's disease control programs in Australia. These include the National Ovine Johne's Disease Control and Evaluation Program (NOJDP) and Market assurance Programs (MAPS)

Ovine Johne's Disease
Collection of resources on OJD published by the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia.

Chronic Wasting Disease
Published by the National Wildlife Health Center, US Geological Survey. Gives a brief introduction to CWD as well as links to fact sheets, bibliographies and other resources.

Diagnostic Tests for Johne's Disease in Deer
This report is provided by the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation. It examines the range of options for use in diagnosing deer with Johne's disease.

Produced by the US Department of Agriculture Animal Health and Plant Inspection Service, this site publishes a collection of fact sheets on various animal diseases.

Ark Datadase - Deer
"The ARKdb database system provides comprehensive public repositories for genome mapping data from farmed and other animal species, providing a resource similar in function to that offered by GDB or MGD for human or mouse mapping data respectively. Data stored includes details of loci and markers, references/papers, authors, genetic linkage map assignments, cytogenetic map assignments, experimental techniques, PCR primers and conditions and any other data pertaining to genome mapping." The database can be accessed by locus/marker, by published reference or by map.

Organisations

Deer Industry Association of Australia (DIAA)
The DIAA represents farmers, processors, transporters, breed organisations and any other party involved in the deer industry. It negotiates with Government agencies on many topics vital to the deer industry, including the use of levy funds and development of protocols for the export of venison and velvet. Links to deer fact sheets, veterinary information, membership information and contact details are also provided.

Deer Specialist Group
The DSG is auspiced by the Instituto de Investigaciones Biológicas Clemente Estable and Facultad de Ciencias de la Universidad de la República Oriental del Uruguay. Their mission is to "contribute to the biodiversity conservation through the improvement of the welfare of viable deer populations in the world." This site provides a newsletter and online papers, deer biology information and a description of threats to deer populations.

Based in Staffordshire, England, the Deer Study and Resource Centre provides support to anyone with deer-related questions. They are contactable by email at enquiries@deerstudy.com
