Information Gateways

Aquaculture Network Information Center
The Aquaculture Network Information Center (AquaNIC) is a USA based voluntary alliance of the National Agricultural Library (NAL), land-grant universities and other agricultural organisations, in cooperation with citizen groups and government agencies. AquaNIC houses or provides links to state, national, and international aquaculture publications, newsletters, visual media, calendars, job services, directories and specialty sections for species and production systems. The site includes links to publications, web sites, multimedia, education, and jobs. It is also possible to join a discussion group.

NetVet - Fish
This information gateway is a collection of links to fish related information on the Internet. The links are organised into the following broad categories: general, aquaculture, aquaria, ichthyology, marine fish, sport fishing, zebrafish and commercial.

Information Resources on Fish Welfare
Published by the US Department of Agriculture in July 2003. This publication is No. 20 in the Animal Welfare Information Center Resource Series. The site provides an expansive bibliography on fish publications including educational training materials and web resources.

Fishes: Australian Museum Fish Site
Compiled by the Australian Museum, this site contains information on hundreds of species of fish, including a link to the Australian Museums Online (AMOL) fish family identification key. The site also contains fact sheets on fish species, a "virtual" dissections of fish, as well as links to related resources.

SARDI - Aquatic Sciences
The South Australian Research and Development Institute conducts research and development into the food, fibre, and biosciences industries. This section on aquatic sciences includes resources on aquaculture, sustainable fisheries, environment and ecology, fisheries statistics, and integrated bio-systems.

FishBase
FishBase is a relational database with information to cater to professionals such as research scientists, fisheries managers and zoologists. It was developed at the World Fish Center in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). FishBase on the web contains full information on 25,000 species.

LarvalBase
LarvalBase in a database of information about fish larvae, relevant to the aquaculture and fisheries research fields. LarvalBase was proposed by the World Fish Center and IfM-Kiel (Institute for Marine Research in Kiel), funded by BMZ and established at IfM-Kiel.

Aquatic Network
The Aquatic Network, based in the USA, provides information about living resources and technology relating to marine and freshwater environments. The site includes a directory of products, services, associations, and publications relating to marine and freshwater environments.

Fish Necropsy : External and Internal anatomy
Authored by Randy White, DVM, from Purdue University, this site aims to provide an overview of the external and internal anatomy of a fish and consists of a range of teaching modules in video format with accompanying audio instruction. These videos can be viewed using RealPlayer. The material includes an introduction and summary, external and internal anatomy of fish, finclip, squash and skin scrape.

A Fish Farmer's Guide to Understanding Water Quality
Authored by LaDon Swann, Department of Animal Sciences, Purdue University, this full text article is designed to help the fish farmer understand the properties of water as they affect fish culture.

Ichthyology at the Florida Museum of Natural History
This is the Ichthyology page of the University of Florida, Museum of Natural History website. The Museum's ichthyology collection represents a rich resource of biodiversity information particularly in regard to the three key south Florida ecosystems. The website features information on sharks, tropical research, biological profiles of fish species. There are sections for children and secondary students, an image gallery.

FISHBOT: Fish Identity Search Heuristic Based On Taxonomy
FISHBOT is a computer-based, interactive fish identification tool created by the Auburn University Museum Fish Collection. Rather than using a static key as a way to identify fish it allows users to input as few or as many characteristics as they want. FISHBOT then provides all possible species that fit these parameters plus photographs, range maps, and comparisons so that the species can be identified. FISHBOT then leads the user a page with a complete description of the species, more photographs and a map.

Catalog of Fishes
Published by the California Academy of Science. Tha catalog lists over 53,000 species and subspecies of fishes according to species name and classification. The catalog is searchable by Latin name, genera or reference (description).

Museum of Comparative Zoology - Icthyology Department
This site includes a database of the Museum's Fish Collection, searchable by scientific name, information about projects conducted by the Icthyology Department and links to icthyology resources. The Museum of Comparative Zoology is a part of Harvard University.

European Register of Marine Species
The European Register of Marine Species (ERMS) is an authoritive taxonomic list of species occuring in the European marine environment. It is part of the Marine Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning EU Network of Excellence.

Northeast Fisheries Science Center
The Northeast Fisheries Science Center is part of the NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service. Its website contains a vast collection of resources on fish species, habitat, biodiversity and sustainable development of marine resources.

A guide for the laboratory use of zebrafish Danio (Brachydanio) rerio
An online guidebook covering laboratory use of the zebrafish Danio (Brachydanio) rerio. Authored by Monte Westerfield of the Institute of Neuroscience, University of Oregon, this is the 4th edition.

Zebrafish Embryology Tutorial
This is part of a series of web pages that presents modules on developmental biology. It was created by Jeff Hardin at the University of Wisconsin-Madison as a supplement to undergraduate courses in animal development. The stages of embryogenesis in the zebrafish are investigated including fertilisation, cleavage, gastrulation, and neurulation. Information is conveyed by text, pictures, movies and diagrams.

Stages of Embryonic Development of the Zebrafish
Online version of a research paper by Charles Kimmel, et. al. of the Institute of Neuroscience, University of Oregon. Published on the web by the Zebrafish Information Network. This paper discusses the developmental stages of the zebrafish embryo and provides many diagrams and photomicrographs as illustration. A glossary and bibliography are also provided.

Fish anaesthetic types and uses
An outline of the methods and risks involved in the anaesthesia of fish. Written for the serious hobbyist by FishDoc, this site discusses several anaesthetics, including MS222, Benzocaine and clove oil.

Fisheries Research and Development Corporation
The FRDC is a rural research and development corporation within the Commonwealth Government portfolio of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry - Australia (AFFA). It is concerned with planning, funding and managing the Research & Development needs of fisheries. There are links to information on Australia's fishing industry, to FRDC publications and to their quarterly magazine R"D News.

Aquafin Cooperative Research Centre
The Aquafin CRC is a research and education provider for the sustainable aquaculture of finfish in Australia. The main research emphasis is on Atlantic salmon and southern bluefin tuna. The Aquafin CRC is a joint venture of a large group of research institutions, universities, industry associations, companies and the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation. The site gives details of the Centre's research and education projects and publications.

The Institute of Aquaculture, Stirling University, UK.
This is the home page of the Institute of Aquaculture, an international research and postgraduate training centre. The site provides information on current research, links to recent publications and Fishing For Info, a guide to Internet resources in aquatic science.

American Fisheries Society
The American Fisheries Society promotes scientific research and enlightened management of resources for optimum use and enjoyment by the public. There are links to the journals published by AFS. The scope of the website is comprehensive and includes information for the professional on meetings, education programs, awards, certification, publications, employment and resources.

The home page of the Australian New Guinea Fish Association, this site provides information on projects assisting with endangered or vulnerable species of fish in Australia and New Guinea. Links to affiliated sites are included.

Native Fish Information Sheets
An Australian Capital Territory Government site, this page includes links to a series of information sheets in .pdf format. Information sheets on introduced species are also available.

Dragon Search - leafy and weedy seadragon monitoring program
This is a monitoring program which gathers sighting information from members of the public to determine the distribution (and therefore habitat and research/management priorities) for leafy and weedy sea dragons. The analysis of the sightings database are updated regularly, and there is general information about the leafy and weedy sea dragons .

Native Fish Australia
Native Fish Australia is a volunteer organisation open to anyone interested in the well being of Australia's native freshwater fish and the rivers, streams and other waterways that they inhabit. Information about native fish and links to other Australian fish pages are included on the site.

Guide to the South American Cichlidae
Guide to the South American Cichlidae by Sven O Kullander of the Department of Vertebrate Zoology, Swedish Museum of Natural History is a non-commercial, technical source of information about the systematics, taxonomy and geographical distribution of South American cichlids. Presented on the web by the Kansas University Natural History Museum and Biodiversity Research Center. This is the electronic publication of Field Guide to Anemone Fishes and their Host Sea Anemones by Dr. Daphne G. Fautin, California Academy of Sciences, University of Kansas and Dr. Gerald R. Allen , Western Australian Museum, published in paper format by the Western Australian Museum in 1992.

Hexacorallians of the World
Constructed by Daphne G. Fautin of Kansas University this website is a "compilation of publications concerning taxonomy, nomenclature, and geographic distribution of extant hexacorallians - members of cnidarian orders Actiniaria (sea anemones in the strict sense), Antipatharia (black corals), Ceriantharia (tube anemones), Corallimorpharia (sea anemones in the loose sense), Ptychodactiaria (sea anemones in the loose sense), Scleractinia (hard or stony corals), and Zoanthidea (sea anemones in the loose sense)." It features a catalogue of species, bibliography of literature in which they were described, inventory of type specimens, distribution maps, and images.

AQUAPLAN
AQUAPLAN is Australia's National Strategic Plan for Aquatic Animal Health 1998 - 2003. It is a broad strategy that outlines objectives and projects to develop a national approach to the management of aquatic animal health in Australia, including emergency preparedness.

Fish health issues
Part of the Department of Fisheries, Government of Western Australia website. Provides information fish diseases, disease, surveillance, water quality, diagnosis of samples, and human health.

Fishdisease.net
Fishdisease.net is a web community for aquatic animal health professionals. It is written by Dr Alistair D. M. Dove Senior Research Associate, Marine Disease Pathology and Research Consortium, Cornell University. The website publishes a vast collection of fish disease resources.

Disease of Fish
Authored by Robert B. Moeller Jr, DVM, from the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology Washington, DC, USA, this page examines the biology of fish and fish diseases.

Whirling Disease Foundation
Website of the Whirling Disease Foundation (US). Features an archive of articles, an FAQ section, details of symposia, a bibliography of publications on whirling disease, and links to other resources.

Manual of Diagnostic Tests for Aquatic Animals
Published by the Office International des Epizooties. The OIE monitors animal diseases worldwide and provides scientific veterinary information.

Digital atlas of fathead minnow normal histology
The University of Maryland, Aquatic Pathobiology Center has produced this resource on the fathead minnow fish. Included on the site is a general introduction, information on the renal, reproduction, respiratory and integumentary (skin) systems and sensory organs. Illustrations, micrographs and photographs show the anatomical regions.

Environment Australia Coasts and Oceans
An initiative of the Australian Government, Environment Australia Coasts and Oceans aims to provide information and guidance on action to understand and care for Australia's coasts and oceans. Their home page includes information on marine protected areas, introduced marine pests, coastal and marine pollution.

Marine Aquarium Society of Sydney (MASS)
The home page of the Marine Aquarium Society of Sydney, this site includes species and conservation information, as well as links to Australian and International Marine Aquarium Related Sites.

NOAA Fisheries Shark Web Site
This Web site has been produced by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and consists of a series of fact sheets about sharks, ranging from shark biology to reducing the risks of shark attack. A useful list of links to other Web sites, arranged into topic areas, is also provided.

Shark Dissection Webcast
A webcast of the dissection of four sharks by Dr. Jeffrey Graham at the Birch Aquarium. The species in question are Mako, Blue, Thresher and Salmon sharks.

All Catfish Species Inventory
The All Catfish Species Inventory has been created by a global consortium of taxonomists and systematists to "facilitate the discovery, description and dissemination of knowledge of all catfish species". The website includes a classification of catfishes, digital images of type-specimens, identification keys, distribution maps, and a bibliography of catfish taxonomy.

ReefQuest Centre for Shark Research
The ReefQuest Centre aims to promote shark and ray conservation through research and public education. This site provides extensive information on shark and ray biology and conservation.

Published by IVIS (International Veterinary Information Service), this article by P R Bowser, Aquatic Animal Health Program, Department of Microbiology and Immunology, College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University, summarises the most commonly utilised methods of anaesthesia in fish.

Do fish feel pain?
Published in ANZCCART (Australian and New Zealand Council for the Care of Animals in Research and Teaching) Newsletter Volume 12, Number 4, December 1999. "This review summarises the findings from neurological, pharmacological and behavioural studies which suggest that fish can feel pain." Pain, Fear and Learning in Fish
This site is written by a PhD student, in fish biology, Marine Cassoret-Bedoucha, from the University of Bristol, Great Britain. Her work examines the behavioural point of view of the importance of fear and pain in fish.

Nutrient Requirements of Fish (1993)
Published by the National Academy Press, this is a book produced by the US National Research Council Subcommittee on the Nutrient Requirements of Fish. The full-text of this book is freely available online, and can be browsed by chapter or searched by keyword. The book presents a broad analysis of the nutrient requirements of various species and information on nutrition and practical feeding to ensure successful aquaculture.
