Equine Stereotypies
While traditionally viewed as "stable vices", repetitive, invariant and apparently functionless behaviours in the horse such as crib-biting, wind-sucking, weaving and box-walking are becoming better understood. Recent data suggest that some deleterious "effects" (e.g. colic) of these so-called stereotypies may reflect underlying problems that horses are attempting to resolve by the performance of the behaviours. Therefore, attempts to prevent the behaviour may do more harm than good. This article, written for veterinarians, emphasizes the need to understand more about the causes and functions of equine stereotypies. Written by C. J. Nicol from The Division of Animal Health and Husbandry, Department of Clinical Veterinary Science, North Somerset, United Kingdom. Publisher: International Veterinary Information Service, Ithaca, New York, USA.
