Nomenclature of Phosphorus-Containing Compounds of Biochemical Importance Covers recommendations made by the IUPAC Commissions on the Nomenclature of Inorganic and of Organic Chemistry (CNIC and CNOC) for naming a large number of organic compounds containing phosphorus.
Microbiology and Immunology Online This is an on-line textbook from the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. The chapters of the book are expanded versions of lectures given to 2nd year medical students and have been edited by Dr Richard Hunt. Unfamiliar words are highlighted and give access to an On-line Medical Dictionary. Some chapters include slides, molecular structures and movies. The requisite programs to view these can be downloaded from the site. Subjects covered include bacteriology, immunology, virology, parasitology and mycology.
Online Biology Book The Online Biology Book is hosted by Estrella Mountain Community College, in Avondale, Arizona. It consists of modified lecture outlines developed by M. J. Farabee over many years of teaching college-level introductory biology. Subject coverage is comprehensive and includes chemistry, cells, thermodynamics, genetics, plants, animals, paleobiology and biological diversity.
BMC Microbiology BMC Microbiology publishes original research on all aspects of microbiology. It is provided through BioMed Central.
Annals of Clinical Microbiology and Antimicrobials The Annals of Clinical Microbiology and Antimicrobials publishes articles covering clinical microbiology, infectious diseases and antimicrobials. It is provided through BioMed Central.

ICTVdB: The Universal Virus Database
This Web site consist of a virus database was developed and is maintained by Dr Cornelia Büchen-Osmond of Columbia University, New York. The database is based on the Seventh report of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) and was designed for taxonomic research and for understanding relationships among viruses. The database can be browsed via the Index of virus names and the picture gallery or searched, using a natural language search engine, via the virus descriptions section.
All the Virology on the WWW
The site features The Big Picture Book of Viruses an index to virus pictures on the web, which also functions as a resource for viral taxonomy. The site also contains links and information on virology research and data sites, specific virus servers and information, aids information/research, viral diseases, vaccines and treatments, organisations and groups of interest to virologists, educational resources including online tutorials, and general virology information and news including virology and microbiology dictionaries.
A Concise Review of Veterinary Virology
Electronic textbook edited by G.R. Carter, D.J. Wise and E.F. Flores and published by IVIS, Ithaca NY, 2004. The book features sections on basic virology and pathogenic virology, with new chapters being regularly added. Users must register with IVIS to access this resource. Registration is free.
University of Wisconsin Institute for Molecular Virology
This site includes resources such as articles, computer programs, information on emerging viruses, conferences, indexes, links to newsgroups, reference guides, relevant sites and information on specific viruses. A multimedia library of images and animations is a feature of the site.
Virus Databases Online
Published by the Research School of Biological Sciences at the Australian National University. The site hosts the following databases:
Hendra Virus
These pages were developed by Judith Mauder at the CSIRO. The site contains a powerpoint presentation detailing the history of the virus, histopathology and genetic analysis, diagnostic tools and further research developments.
Veterinary Virology
This site, published by Duke University, USA, includes information and slides. The following sections are included: orthomyxoviruses, herpiviruses, morbilliviruses and retroviruses.
Retroviruses This website is an electronic version of the book Retroviruses by John M. Coffin et al (eds) published by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press, New York, in 1997.The book deals with viral structure, function, and replication and with the interplay between the virus and the host, focusing primarily on the effects of the virus on the host. It is made available on the web by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI).
Smallpox and Vaccinia This website is a chapter by Donald A. Henderson and Bernard Moss from the book Vaccines. 3rd ed. by Stanley A. Plotkin and Walter A. Orenstein (eds) published by W. B. Saunders Company, Philadelphia, in 1999. The chapter discusses epidemiology, active immunisation, and recombinant vaccinia virus vaccines. It is made available on the web by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI).
Brucellosis in the Greater Yellowstone Area Electronic publication by National Academy Press of Brucellosis in the Greater Yellowstone Area (1998) by Norman F. Cheville, Dale R. McCullough and Lee R. Paulson. This book is the result of a six-month study in 1997 by the Board of Agriculture and the Board on Environmental Studies and Toxicology into the potential of wildlife in the Yellowstone National Park to spread Brucellosis to cattle grazing on adjacent land. It discusses management strategies that would be most useful in controlling potential transmission to domestic livestock and thereby to humans.
Introduction to Molecular Virology This tutorial by Ed Rybicki, Lecturer in Virology, Department of Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of Cape Town supports a 30-lecture course for 3rd year students. It relies heavily on both print and electronically published work, as well as material that has not been published.
