WWW Virtual Library: Mycology
Website created by Dr. Kathie T. Hodge, Department of Plant Pathology, Cornell University. A portal with links to resources including directories of mycologists and mycological labs, general resources on taxonomy, biology, pathology, regional field guides and inventories, commercial businesses and vendors links, herbaria and culture collections, newsletters, books and serials links, molecular genetics and fungal taxonomy, nomenclatural and taxonomic resources.

General resources

University of Sydney Library Catalogue
Some recommended subject headings on the University of Sydney Library Catalogue appear below. Please check all related subject headings for comprehensive coverage.

Introduction to the Biology of Fungi
Produced by the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Sydney, this site is aimed at people who wish to develop their understanding of fungi. The package is primarily aimed at students enrolled in tertiary learning and is freely available via the Web.

Mycology online
Mycology Online is a joint project of the Mycology Unit at the Adelaide Womens & Childrens Hospital, the Department of Microbiology & Immunology at the University of Adelaide, and Adelaide Science Online at the University of Adelaide. It provides a classification, detailed discription and images of fungi and mycoses as well as a case database and details of laboratory methods.

Dr Fungus
This site is edited by Micheal McGinnis Professor of Pathology and John Rex, Associate Professor of Medicine, University of Texas, USA, Sevtap Arikan, Associate Professor of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology, Hacettepe University Medical School, Turkey and Libsen Rodriguez, Assistant Professor, Universidad Central de Venezuela. Dr Fungus includes introductory information, descriptions, synonyms, an image bank, discussions on medical, veterinary and agricultural mycology including drug information (the veterinary drugs section is currently under development). Laboratory procedures and histopathology are included as well as educational resources and links.

Microbial World: The Fungal Web
Published by the University of Edinburgh, this site provides profiles on a range of mycological topics. Some examples are:

Veterinary Bacteriology and Mycology
Web site of the Veterinary Bacteriology and Mycology course at the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Wisconsin - Madison. This site presents lecture and laboratory slides on various bacterial and fungal infections of animals. Descriptions of organisms and information relating to pathogenesis, host response and therapy are included. The links page lists other sites that may be of interest.

Understanding and Coping with Effects of Mycotoxins in Livestock Feed and Forage
A paper published by N.C State University, which includes information on a range of subjects including safe levels of mycotoxins, available mycotoxin data, mycotoxins and animal health, effects of mycotoxins on the health and productivity of production animals and prevention and management of mycotoxins.

Aflatoxins
This page is from the US Food and Drug Administration Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, Foodborne Pathogenic Microorganisms and Natural Toxins hand book. It is a brief guide to aflatoxins with links to definitions and databased information.

CBS databases
CBS (Centraalbureau voor Schimmelcultures) maintains and distributes collections of cultures such as fungi, yeasts, bacteria, plasmids, gene-libraries and phages, aphyllophorales and fusarium. The databases can be searched by species name, strain number, or properties of species and strains.

Fungal Genetics Stock Centre
This site is developed by the Fungal Genetics Stock Center at the School of Biological Sciences University of Missouri, Kansas City. It includes a newsletter published annually, collections for Aspergillus, Sordaria, Neurospora, Fusarium, Nectria, nomenclature recommendations and a cloned genes and gene library.

FungiMap
Fungimap is a collaborative project between professional and amateur mycologists and naturalists to gather information about the distribution of fungi throughout Australia. Includes a section on edible and poisonous fungi, however, the focus is on human ingestion. When using Internet Explorer, this site is best viewed with the font size set at normal.

Species 2000
This is a website hosted by the commercial biotechnology company ATCC. The site includes an index of plant species, animals, fungi and microbes for use as practical research tools. You can verify the scientific name, status and classification of any known species via the Species Locator, which provides access to species checklist data drawn from an array of databases. Databases can be searched by name or type of organism.

Cornell Center for Fungal Biology
This site is maintained by Jim Babcock and Gordon Hill at Cornell University. It provides information on the fungi collected from the Lindsay-Parsons Biodiversity Preserve in West Danby, USA, as well as by Cornell University and external sources. Links to fungal sites in the USA are provided.

The Bruns Lab
The Bruns Lab is based at the Department of Plant and Microbial Biology, University of California at Berkeley. The website includes a virtual tour of the lab, a photo gallery of fungi, primer sequences and maps, an ectomycorrhizal sequence database and full text versions of published articles by Department of Plant and Microbial Biology staff.

Cryptococcosis

Cryptococcosis
Part of the Mycology online website, this section gives a detailed description and provides images of cryptococcosis. Areas covered include clinical manifestations, laboratory diagnosis, and management. The site also includes a section featuring a discussion and images of cryptococcus neoformans.

Cryptococcosis
Full text of a paper presented by Professor Carlos Eduardo Larsson at the 27th World Small Animal Veterinary Association, Granada, Spain, October 2002. Discusses the causes, pathogenesis, clinical features, and diagnosis of cryptococcosis

What makes cryptococcus neoformans a pathogen?
Full text of an article written by Kent L. Buchanan and Juneann W. Murphy, University of Oklahoma, published in the Journal of emerging diseases, vol. 4 no. 1 (Jan-March 1998). A detailed discussion of cryptococcus neoformans, including pathogenesis and virulence factors, and an examination of the characteristics it must possess to enter the host and establish progressive disease.

Cryptococcus mould
Part of the Certified Mold Inspectors and Contractors Institute website. Provides details and images of cryptococcus neoformans including a discussion cryptococcosis.

Cryptococcus neoformans
Part of the Microbes.info, a microbiology information portal. This page contains several links to Cryptococcus neoformans resources.

Organisations

Australasian Mycological Society
The site includes information about the society, reports, conferences and links.

International Mycological Association (IMA)
The IMA was founded in 1971 and represents mycologists world wide. The IMA constitutes the Section for General Mycology of the International Union of Biological Societies (IUBS), the primary biological component of the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU). The site contains news about the Association and information for members.

British Mycological Society
The site includes details of the Society's resources and publications. Links to British fungus groups and mycology sites, European mycological sites, mycological registers including databases, and medical mycology can be found on the site.

Mycological Society of America
The Mycological Society of America is a scientific society dedicated to advancing the science of mycology including the study of medically important fungi. The site contains information for members, a small slide collection and a list of links.
