Cestrum parqui - green cestrum


Epidemiology

  • mainly cattle and poultry affected; sheep, pigs and cattle also
  • feed needs to be scarce before plant eaten

Pathogenesis

  • toxin not known

Clinical Signs

  • sudden death
  • intense abdominal pain
  • alternating depression and mania; paralysis, coma, death

Necropsy

  • centrilobular hepatic necrosis - acute dark swollen liver
    • if less acute - liver pale with reddish mottling
  • portal hypertension - induces duodenal congestion and haemorrhage - causes oedema of gall bladder
    • myocardial haemorrhage and serous haemorrhages
  • hepatic encephalopathy - cerebral spongy degeneration

Diagnosis

  • history; presence of plants

Treatment

  • none
