Epidemiology

  • no confirmed cases in Australia although one report in SA in 1961
  • in North America and Europe

Pathogenesis

  • mouldy silage, hay
  • coumarin converted into highly toxic dicoumarol that interferes with prothrombin synthesis
  • haemorrhagic diathesis primarily in cattle
