General Resources
University of Sydney Library Catalogue
Recommended subject headings on the University of Sydney Library Catalogue are:
Parasites and Parasitological Resources Maintained and published by the College of Biological Sciences at Ohio State University, this Web site contains more than 550 images representing more than 180 species of parasites. A diagrammatic menu is provided for easy navigation and species are listed alphabetically and taxonomically. Specific parasitic diseases are also listed alphabetically. There are flow diagrams of parasite lifecycles, links to other online resources and a section titled "parasites and your pets".
Microbiology and Immunology Online: Part 4 Parasitology An online text written by Richard Hunt and Abdul Ghaffar from the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of South Carolina, on parasites of relevance to humans. Other sections are available on immunology, bacteriology, virology and mycology. Some lecture notes are also available in .pdf and PowerPoint format.
Nematode.net Nematode.net is a project of Genome Sequencing Center, Washington University School of Medicine. It involves projects to generate 315,000 ESTs (Expressed Sequence Tags) from about 30 parasitic nematode species. The website has been created to "to allow easy access to this new gene sequence information including expressed sequence tags (ESTs), NemaGene EST clusters, and sequence trace files".
Veterinary Clinical Parasitology Images
Developed by Professor J. Carl Fox of the College of Veterinary Medicine, Oklahoma State University, this site is intended as an online parasitology resource for veterinarian training and education. The site is comprised of approximately 350 images, predominantly microscope slide images, of various nematodes, protozoans and other parasites. The images illustrate elements such as morphology, internal features, lifecycle stages, histopath sections, eggs, larvae and infection of animal cells. Images are grouped by diagnostic stage, parasite and in eight separate galleries. There are also some lecture slides available.
Parasitology life cycles Part of the Computer Aided Learning website hosted by the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. The site is "intended to reinforce important principles in the diagnosis, epidemiology, pathology, and treatment and control of selected parasites of significance in veterinary medicine." It also features a glossary.
Parasites and Parasitic Diseases of Domestic Animals This is an an online book of text and images by Colin Johnstone PhD, BVMS, MRCVS and is part of the University of Pennsylvania's School of Veterinary Medicine Computer Aided Learning program.
It includes dicussions of nematodes, trematodes, oxyuroidea, siphonaptera, and parasiticides
Diagnosis of Veterinary Endoparasitic Infections This website is part of the University of Pennsylvania's School of Veterinary Medicine Computer Aided Learning program. It is designed to aid students, researchers, and clinicians in diagnosing parasitic infections. The site details endoparasites of various hosts and gives practical instructions including images for several diagnostic techniques. Details of common pharmaceuticals used to treat endoparasitic infections are also included.
Veterinary Parasitology Lab Demonstrations (VPTH 603) This website consists of images of parasites along with explanatory notes for each image. The site is part of the University of Pennsylvania's School of Veterinary Medicine Computer Aided Learning program. Parasites covered include strongyles, ascarids, spirurids, trematodes and protazoa. Further laboratory demonstrations and laboratory techniques are also provided.
Companion and Exotic Animal Parasitology This is an electronic book edited by D. D. Bowman, MS PhD and published by the International Veterinary Information Service. It features chapters on parasites affecting dogs, cats, horses, guinea pigs and primates. Users need to register with IVIS to gain access. Registration is simple and free.
Atlas of Medical Parasitology An online atlas of human parasitology, provided by the Carlo Denegri Foundation, the Infectious Diseases Clinic, Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences, University of Torino and the Amedeo di Savoia Hospital, Unit A of Infectious Diseases. The atlas is divided into anatomical sections and includes case reports, updates and images.
Internal parasites of goats A series of animations created by Karin Christensen and published by Imagecyte. The animations illustrate the life cycles of some common goat parasites, namely: Eimeria, Moniezia expansa, and Haemonchus contortus.
Toxoplasma: a Fetal and Sometimes Fatal Parasite A series of lecture slides for medical students at the University of Pittsburgh. Written by Angel Criado of the University of Alcala de Henares, Madrid, these lectures cover the biology and epidemiology of the parasite and discuss preventative measures. The site also has links to a range of other lectures covering epidemiology, public health, special diseases and telecommunication.
External Parasites
Paralysis Tick of Australia This web site compiled by Norbert Fischer BVSc MACVSc (Surg) covers, in detail, the biology and medicine of the Australian Paralysis Tick (Ixodes holocyclus). It features many images, diagrams and animations, as well as links to other sites. Animations require Macromedia's FLASH browser-plugin to be viewed.
Companion Animal Dermatology
This site primarily presents information relating to fleas, ticks and Otitis external (inflammation of the external ear canal) in companion animals. The information on this site was prepared by James O. Noxon, DVM and published by Iowa State University, College of Veterinary Medicine.
Fleas Factsheet
Ohio State University extension fact sheet on fleas, written by William F. Lyon. Covers biology, identification, life cycle and control measures.
Prevention and Control
WormBoss WormBoss was developed by the Australian Sheep Industry Cooperative Research Centre (Sheep CRC) and Australian Wool Innovation Ltd (AWI) to develop programs for the sustainable management and control of sheep worms. The website provides practical information for producers and is divided into sections on worm management, drenches, sheep, and worms.
How To Prevent Transmission of Intestinal Roundworms from Pets to People
Prepared by the Division of Parasitic Diseases, National Center for Infectious Diseases, this site consists of guidelines that address transmission of intestinal ascarids and hookworms from dogs and cats to people and recommend counselling of dog and cat owners and well timed preventive anthelmintic treatments for pets.
Parasitic Pathways - Animals (zoonotic diseases) This site offers fact sheets on specific zoonotic diseases. There is an alphabetical listing of parasites and assistance with identification and diagnosis is available. This site is produced by the US Government Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Center for Infectious Diseases, Division of Parasitic Diseases.
Organisations
International Consortium on Ticks and Tick-borne Diseases (ICTTD-2)
Hosted by Utrecht University, Holland, this site is the homepage for the International Consortium on Ticks and Tick-borne Diseases. The consortium aims "to provide a forum for a global network of specialists working on ticks and tick-borne diseases and to advocate an integrated research strategy covering the range of tick-borne pathogens that are present in a particular geographical region". The site provides access to the Consortium's newsletter and includes a list of related web resources.
American Association of Veterinary Parasitologists The AAVP is a scientific and educational organisation with the aim of studying parasites that afflict companion, food-producing, and other domesticated animals and wildlife. Their site includes information about the parasites that afflict food animals, horses, companion animals and exotic animals. They produce an electronic newsletter three times a year.
American Society of Parasitologists The ASP describes itself as "a diverse group of over 1500 scientists from industry, government, and academia who are interested in the study and teaching of Parasitology." The site includes a newsletter and links to image galleries, databases, education and career advice.
