    Collection of links to pharmacy resources prepared by the University of Sydney Library. Resources include drugs databases and indexes, formularies, manuals, handbooks, and dictionaries.     The Merck Veterinary Manual - Pharmacology
    Merck have made the The Merck Veterinary Manual - 8th Edition Online freely available on the web. The pharmacology chapter contains sections on systemic pharmacotherapeutics, chemotherapeutics, antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral agents, anthelmintics, vaccines, and ectoparaciticides. There is now a 9th edition of The Merck Veterinary Manual but this is not freely available on the web.

    2005 Online Green Book
    The FDA Approved Animal Drug Products, (Green Book), is published by the Drug Information Laboratory. It contains details of animal drug products approved by the FDA. Updates are published monthly.

    US Pharmacopeia: veterinary medicine
    "The United States Pharmacopeia (USP) is the official public standards-setting authority for all prescription and over-the-counter medicines, dietary supplements, and other healthcare products manufactured and sold in the United States." The USP publishes "in-depth, evidence-based label and extra-label drug information monographs for veterinary practitioners on the use of human and animal products." These publications are freely accessible from the website by filling in a simple registration form.

    Veterinary clinical pharmacology
    Published by the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. Contains lecture notes and other materials for veterinary pharmacology courses. Subjects include: Clinical Pharmacology, Fundamentals of Veterinary Pharmacology, Pharmacokinetics, and Clinical Pharmacology of Antineoplastic Agents.

    KinetiClass
    Published by the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. "KinetiClass is an interactive pharmacokinetics teaching tool. Dynamic worksheets are provided that demonstrate a variety of concepts that apply to clinical veterinary patients."

    Veterinary Formulary
    Published by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, University of Minnesota. Provides an alphabetical listing of approved drug doses by therapeutic class.

    National Office of Animal Health (NOAH)
    "The National Office of Animal Health (NOAH) represents the UK animal medicines industry: its aim is to promote the benefits of safe, effective, quality medicines for the health and welfare of all animals." Its website publishes papers covering subjects such as veterinary medicines, vaccination, antibiotics, and food safety.

    Case studies in clinical pharmacology
    Part of the Computer Aided Learning (CAL) Web site published by the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. This module presents case studies where students are required to provide differential diagnoses, further diagnostics and specify appropriate drug choice and dose.

    14th Biennial Symposium of the American Academy of Veterinary Pharmacology & Therapeutics
    Published by IVIS. The full text of proceedings at the 14th Biennial Symposium of the American Academy of Veterinary Pharmacology & Therapeutics - 2005 - Rockville, MD, USA. Papers cover subjects including pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, antimicrobials, teaching veterinary pharmacology, drug regulation, veterinary compounding and allometry. Users must register with IVIS to gain access. Registration is simple and free.

    Louisiana State University Cancer Treatment Center
    Collection of resources dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of companion animals with cancer published by the Louisiana State University Cancer Treatment Center. These include lecture notes, handouts, and slides dealing with, oncology, principles of chemotherapy and details of chemotherapeutic agents commonly used in veterinary medicine.

    Databases

    University of Sydney - Pharmacy databases
    The University of Sydney Library provides access to a large number of databases for University of Sydney staff and students. Most Library electronic resources are available via the Internet. If you are using an Internet Service Provider other than the University of Sydney's Extro, they can now be accessed from off-campus simply by clicking the open database link and entering your authentication details. Several databases, marked Password, require you to get a special password for off-campus access. A few databases, marked Setup Reqd, require you to especially set up your web browser to search them off-campus.

    MIMS IVS
    Australian database of veterinary drugs published by MIMS Australia. This database is not available on-line but can be accessed in book format at Badham and Camden libraries or as a CD ROM at Camden library only.

    MIMS online
    MIMS Online is the web version of the MIMS medicine database. MIMS Online is published with the co-operation of the pharmaceutical manufacturers, government bodies and various non-government organisations who have supplied the information. The database can be searched by brand/generic name, therapeutic class, or action/indication.

    IVIS Veterinary Drug Database
    Published by International Veterinary Information Service, Ithaca, NY, USA. This database is a global pharmacopeia that can be searched by generic name, brand name, drug category, biological activity or manufacturer. It also has conversion tables and a list of abbreviations. Users must register with IVIS to gain access. Registration is simple and free. This database should not be confused with the Australian veterinary drugs database MIMS IVS. This is not yet available on-line.

    FDA Approved Animal Drug Products Online Database System
    This database allows the user to access information on animal drug products approved by the Federal Drug Administration (US). Access to the database is provided by the Veterinary Medical Informatics Program at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine.

    FARAD
    The Food Animal Residue Avoidance Databank is a National Food Safety Project administered through the U.S. Department of Agriculture. "FARAD is a computer-based decision support system designed to provide livestock producers, extension specialists, and veterinarians with practical information on how to avoid drug, pesticide and environmental contaminant residue problems." It includes VetGRAM the Veterinarians Guide to Residue Avoidance Management. The database can be searched by active ingredient, drug classification, approved species, trade name, or manufacturer. Some areas of the site require users to fill out a free registration form.

    Drug dosage calculators

    Veterinary Emergency Drug Calculator
    Created by W.E. Wingfield, from Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Medicine, Department of Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Colorado State University. The calculators help in the management of severe veterinary emergencies through providing the dosage of emergency drugs for dogs and cats.

    Pharmaceutical Calculations
    Website created by students and staff at R.V.S.College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Sulur, India. The site allows the user to make a range of pharmaceutical calculations.

    Regulatory authorities/Pharmacovigilance

    Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA)
    The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is a unit of the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing responsible for the regulation of prescription, non-prescription, and complementary drugs. "The TGA carries out a range of assessment and monitoring activities to ensure therapeutic goods available in Australia are of an acceptable standard with the aim of ensuring that the Australian community has access, within a reasonable time, to therapeutic advances."

    Australian Pesticides & Veterinary Medicines Authority
    "The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) is an Australian government authority responsible for the assessment and registration of pesticides and veterinary medicines and for their regulation up to and including the point of retail sale.". The Veterinary Guidelines section contains information on veterinary drugs and chemicals. The reporting an adverse experience section gives details on the pharmacovigilance program that facilitates responsible management of veterinary chemical products throughout their lifecycle.

    Veterinary Medicines Directorate
    "An Executive Agency of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs protecting public health, animal health, the environment and promoting animal welfare by assuring the safety, quality and efficacy of veterinary medicines in the United Kingdom." Its website publishes resources and updates on veterinary medicines issues.

    FDA: Center for Veterinary Medicine
    The Center for Veterinary Medicine is part of the FDA and regulates the manufacture and distribution of food additives and drugs that will be given to animals. Its website contains resources and updates on veterinary drugs.

    Antibiotics and resistance

    Joint Expert Technical Advisory Committee on Antibiotic Resistance (JETACAR)
    Collection of reports and other resources on antibiotic resistance published on the Australian Government Department of health and Ageing website.

    Expert Advisory Group on Antimicrobial Resistance (EAGAR)
    Resources on antimicrobial resistance prepared by the Expert Advisory Group on Antimicrobial Resistance (EAGAR) and published on the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) website.

    Judicious Therapeutic Use of Antimicrobials
    The American Veterinary Medical Association publishes its Guidelines for the Judicious Therapeutic Use of Antimicrobials on its website. There are separate sections for cattle, horses, poultry, swine, cats dogs, and fish.

    Antibiotics for Animals
    Collection of briefing documents, press releases and other publications of the National Office of Animal Health (UK). Subjects covered include: antibiotic resistance, fluoroquinolones, anticoccidials, and growth-promoting antibiotics.

    Antibiotic Resistance & Prudent Use of Antibiotics in Veterinary Medicine
    The Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE) published this document to "increase the awareness of prescribing and supervising veterinary surgeons to the problem of antibiotic resistance and to review the basic principles on the prudent use of antibiotics"

    FDA: Antimicrobial resistance
    Collection of resources on antimicrobial resistance published by the FDA. Includes a 9 minute Animation of Antimicrobial Resistance explaining how antimicrobial resistance both emerges and proliferates among bacteria.

    Zoonoses and foodborne animal pathogens
    Collection of documents published by Defra (the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in the UK) on the use of antibiotics and antimicrobial resistance. Includes the Veterinary Laboratories Agency's Antimicrobial Sensitivity Report 2003.

    Antimicrobial Resistance
    Collection of resources on antimicrobial resistance published by the Veterinary Drugs Directorate on the Health Canada website.

    Octagon Services - Technical papers
    Collection of papers written by David Burch BVetmed MRCVS and published by Octagon Services Ltd. Topics covered include pharmacokinetics, antibiotic sensitivity/resistance, enteric and respiratory diseases and therapy. Papers focus on the pig and poultry industries.

    AVMA - Vaccination resources
    Collection of vaccination resources published by the American Veterinary Medical Association. Includes an FAQ section, information on canine and feline vaccination, and the AVMA's Principles of Vaccination.

    University of Nebraska: Vaccine publications
    Collection of publications of the University of Nebraska covering vaccination. Titles include:

    Considerations in designing effective and safe vaccination programs for dogs
    Article written by R. D. Schultz, DVM PhD and published in Recent advances in canine infectious diseases, an electronic book edited by L. Carmichael, DVM PhD, and published by IVIS, Ithaca NY in 1999. Users need to register with IVIS to gain access. Registration is free.
