Pig Health Database
Part of the Pigsite.com web site, this database provides access to the core material from the book Managing Pig Health and the Treatment of Disease, written by Mike Muirhead and Tom Alexander. The database can be browsed by chapter headings, which include: anatomy, physiology, understanding disease, treating disease, skin conditions, exotic diseases, welfare and health and safety. The database can also be searched by keyword. The database is freely available, however a brief registration is required to access the material.

The PigSite is a global hub for information on pigs, hogs and swine and aims to provide a comprehensive resource on pig health and welfare. The site provides access to daily updated news articles, feature articles, a newsletter, discussion forums, a comprehensive business directory and a disease problem solver. It is possible to subscribe to the free pigsite.com newsletter. The site is freely accessible, however brief registration is required for some sections.

Information Resources on Swine Housing, Care and Welfare
Resource compiled and edited by Cynthia P. Smith, M.S. and published by the Animal Welfare Information Center U. S. Department of Agriculture in May 2003. A comprehensive listing of training materials, books, proceedings and website resources as well as an extensive bibliography relating to the care, welfare, and housing of pigs.

National Animal Health Monitoring System: Swine Studies
"NAHMS swine studies provide information on health and health management practices on U.S. swine operations as well as information on animal health concerns identified by producers, industry allies, Federal and State agencies, and researchers". Topics covered include: biosecurity, pork quality assurance, feed management, mating practices, diseases, vaccination and antibiotic use. Includes results of Swine 2001, an extensive study of the US pork industry.

Model Code of Practice for the Welfare of Animals: Pigs (2nd ed)
Full text of Standing Committee of Agriculture and Resource Management (SCARM) Report No. 66 published by the CSIRO. "This Code of Practice is intended as a guide for all people responsible for the welfare of pigs under both intensive and extensive systems. It recognises that the basic requirement for the welfare of pigs is a husbandry system appropriate to their physiological and behavioural needs". The report is in .pdf format and a little slow to download.

Model Code of Practice for the Welfare of Animals: Land Transport of Pigs
Full text of Standing Committee of Agriculture and Resource Management (SCARM) Report No. 63 published by the CSIRO. "This Code of Practice is intended as a guide for people who are involved in transporting pigs. It is intended to encourage considerate treatment of the animals so that transport stress and injury are minimised at all stages of the transport operation". The report is in .pdf format and a little slow to download.

OSU Factsheets - Swine

The Pig Site
This site aims to be a worldwide information hub for pigs and pig issues. Sections include information on health and diseases, breeding and breeds, nutrition, housing and markets. There are discussion groups and a free newsletter. Free registration is required to access some areas.

Published by the Department of Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine at Iowa State University. A very comprehensive and practical website covering the anatomy, health, care, maintenance, behaviour and farming of pigs.

Swine care practices
Pig production information published by the University of California Cooperative Extension. Topics covered include care and management, feeding and nutrition, housing, and health.

Swine research and education
Published by the College of Agriculture, University of Kentucky. This website publishes a collection of resources on pigs.

Proceedings: Symposium on swine housing and well-being.
Full text of proceedings of a symposium held on June 5 2002 in Des Moines, Iowa co-sponsored by the US Department of Agriculture. The proceedings are edited by Richard Reynnells PhD.

Anesthesia of pot bellied pigs
This page discusses anaesthetic techniques in pigs and is published on the web by the Veterinary Support Personnel Network (VSPN), an affiliate of the Veterinary Information Network (VIN). Methods outlined include dissociative anaesthesia, injectable anesthetic combinations, and inhalational anesthesia. Clinical tips are also included.

Resource created by Earl W. Fleck, Ph.D. and hosted by Whitman College, Washington. the site consists of images and quizzes and is divided into sections on the digestive, excretory, circulatory, reproductive, respiratory, and nervous systems. Macromedia Shockwave is required to view the images. This is freely downloadable from the site.

The virtual pig dissection.
Published by Steve Michaud, this is a virtual dissection of a pig. It is illustrated with line diagrams, each with an accompanying brief discussion of the anatomical section pictured. The dissection is divided into: external anatomy, respiratory system, circulatory system, digestive system, male reproductive system, and female reproductive system.

Porcine Myology
Cross sections and lateral views of a pig carcass are pictured and described on this site. The site includes muscle descriptions, supplying names of both wholesale cuts and retail cuts of the meat, as well as bone and cartilage descriptions. It is a US based site, copublished by the National Pork Board ; National Pork Producers Council ; University of Nebraska-Lincoln Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Animal Science Department and University of Nebraska-Lincoln Distance Extension Unit.

Comparative Mammalian Brain Collections
This is a section of the Comparative Mammalian Brain Collections web site of the University of Wisconsin, Michigan State University and the National Medicine of Health and Medicine. It covers physical characteristics and distribution of the brain of the domestic pig (Sus Scrofa), wild boar and detailed information on the brain and how slides are prepared.

Breeds of livestock - Pigs
Published by the Department of Animal Science, Oklahoma State University, this site is an alphabetical listing of pig breeds. Information about each breed featured on the site includes: a brief description of the breed, a short reference list and, in most cases, a photograph. The entries for the more common breeds include longer articles as well as links to further information.

Ark Database
quot;The ARKdb database system provides comprehensive public repositories for genome mapping data from farmed and other animal species, providing a resource similar in function to that offered by GDB or MGD for human or mouse mapping data respectively. Data stored includes details of loci and markers, references/papers, authors, genetic linkage map assignments, cytogenetic map assignments, experimental techniques, PCR primers and conditions and any other data pertaining to genome mapping." The database can be accessed by locus/marker, by published reference or by map.

Website hosted by the National Center for Biotechnology Information provides access to a collection of pig genome resources. Includes an interactive viewer for genome maps, sequences, and genes.

The U.S. Pig Genome Project
Website supported by the National Animal Genome Research Program (NAGRP). The site consists of a series of links to databases, maps, and other resources.

USDA Swine Genome Mapping Project
Publishes results of a project by US Department of Agriculture Meat Animal Research Center including linkage maps and marker tables. The site also allows the user to search the database for markers by name.

Cytogenetic map of the pig
Published by the Laboratoire de Génétique cellulaire The site includes drawings of genes and markers mapped on pig chromosome, along with a list of genes mapped on pig cytogenetic map.

Collection of articles published by the Queensland Department of Primary Industries on general pig health issues and specific diseases.

Farmnotes - Pig health
Collection of Farmnotes and other resources published by the Western Australian Department of Agriculture. Topics covered include: proliferative enteritis, swine erysipelas, sarcoptic mange, swine dysentery, scours, Glassers disease, atrophic rhinitis, and pneumonia.

Pig Disease Information Centre
This UK based organisation's website features links to news items, articles, papers and databases in the areas of pig health, diseases annd welfare. The news archive section covers news items from 1999 to the present.

AUSVETPLAN: Disease strategies
"AUSVETPLAN is a series of technical response plans that describe the proposed Australian approach to an exotic disease incursion". These are published for a series of diseases on the Animal Health Australia website. The plans provide details of the nature of the disease and principles of control and eradication.

Pigs: Disease Information
This site, by Merial, provides information about pig diseases. It divides the endoparasites and ectoparasites into their constituent groups, and looks at their biology, damage to the host and control issues.

Nutrient Requirements of Swine: 10th Revised Edition (1998)
Published in 1998 by the National Academy Press, this is a book produced by the US National Research Council Subcommittee on the Nutrient Requirements of Swine. The full-text of this book is freely available online, and can be browsed by chapter or searched by keyword. The 10th edition of this publication provides guidelines for those involved in the swine and feed industries to develop and implement nutritional and feeding programs for swine.

Swine Nutrition Guide
This site contains links to a number of articles on swine nutrition published by the Kansas State University Animal Science & Industry Research Extension Service. Topics covered include: general nutrition principles, premix, base mix and starter diet recommendations, and starter pig recommendations.

Veterinary Animal Physiology-Physiology of Reproduction
This research group (at the University of Mucia, Spain) focuses their efforts on the biotechnology of porcine reproduction, particularly in vitro fertilization and semen cryopreservation. The web site includes an image gallery and details of research activities undertaken by the group. Some research articles are available in full text.

Potbellied Pig FAQ's and Information Page
Published by Pigs4Ever.com a US based group of pig enthusiasts and owners offering pig rescue and adoption services. The FAQ section of the website provides information on diet, housing, health care, and behaviour.

Pot bellied pigs
Collection of articles written by veterinarian and exotic pet enthusiast, Lianne McLeod, and published by about.com. Articles cover feeding, house training pigs, and care of baby pigs. There are also links to other pig sites.

The Shelter Workers' Guide to Pigs
A 32 page booklet published by PIGS, a sanctuary, a shelter and rescue centre for pigs. The book provides practical information on the housing, feeding, transportation, and health care of pigs. The organisation's website also has an All about pigs section with practical information on keeping pigs as pets.

Pig Index
Collection of articles written by Dr Clive Dalton, an expert in animal production, and Dr Marjorie Orr, a veterinarian. The articles are published on lifestyleblock.co.nz a website for lifestyle farmers in New Zealand. Articles cover most aspects pig health and husbandry for small farmers.
