This section is maintained with the assistance of the students of the University of Sydney, Faculty of Veterinary Science. It is intended as a resource for veterinary and animal scientists in practice who wish to refer their clients to high quality sources of information. VeterinaryPartner.com is an information site run by an American based organisation, the Veterinary Information Network (VIN). The site includes an extensive collection of concise, full-text articles on various diseases and conditions in animals. The site also provides links to chats and other bulletin boards for pet owners.

Cat Care and Dog Care
Part of the Web site of the Geelong Animal Welfare Society, which is located in Geelong, Victoria. Includes pages on cat care and dog care The information provided is concise and is aimed at the general public. Included is information on vaccinations, worming, diet, fleas and general information.

Dogs 'n cats SA
This Web site is published by the Dog and Cat Management Board of South Australia. The site publishes a collection of information sheets addressing many issues about dog and cat ownership and care.

Dog and cat care guidelines
Published by the Program for Companion Animal Behavior, School of Veterinary Medicine, UC Davis. The site is aimed at pet owners and gives advise on choosing pets, managing reproduction, understanding behaviour, and providing basic care such as nutrition, water and shelter.

A pet owner's guide to common small animal poisons
Produced by the American Veterinary Medical Association, this site is a guide to common companion animal poisons. It includes plants, drugs, and household products that are potentially poisonous.

Vet on the Web
This Web site was developed and is maintained by Tim Mainland, MA VetMB MRCVS a practising veterinary surgeon in the United Kingdom for over 20 years. This site contains a library of articles on diseases of cats and dogs, geriatric pets, fleas, rearing puppies and kittens and other topics. Included is an article on poultry diseases. Visitors to the Web site can email Tim Mainland with specific problems. Also included are links to other Web sites.

Your Link to Healthy Pets
This Web site was created by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) "an international association of more than 17,000 veterinary care providers". This site contains an on-line pet care library, which provides the latest information on small animal care. Included is information on behaviour, common health problems, human/animal bond, nutrition, pet care tips, preventive care and other resources. It is a great source of information for new and first time pet owners. Also provided is information about the Association and frequently asked questions (FAQ's).

Vetinfo: A Veterinary Information Service
This Web site was written by Dr. Michael Richardson DVM, designed and edited by Michael Justis and produced by TierCom, Inc. The site is divided into three sections: vetinfo, doginfo and catinfo. To find information you can use either the dog, cat or Vetindex or the Vetinfo search engine which will search the Vetinfo site or the Web if your broaden your search. Some of the information included on the site is medical and behavioural information on cats and dogs; diseases and disorders of cats and dogs and general information pertaining to the care and health of your pet. The site also provides information on "customary treatments for a disease or disorder, including laboratory test parameters and drug dosages". Subscribers to the VetInfo Digest have access to the 'Ask Dr Mike' section, which is a question and answer page. There are also links to other Web pages included on the site.

Animal care
This website is published by the British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and is aimed at pet owners. It features sections on birds, cats, dogs, rabbits, rodents, turtles and reptiles. For each species it covers areas such as housing, feeding, handling and grooming.

Pet Care Veterinary Hospital
This website is published by the Pet Care Veterinary Hospital in Virginia, USA. Although a commercial website it features many articles on pet care, including health, housing and feeding written by practising veterinarians. There are sections on dogs, cats, birds, ferrets, reptiles and exotics.

The Humane Society - Pet Care
This webpage is part of the Humane Society of the United States' website. The Humane Society is "dedicated to creating a world where our relationship with animals is guided by compassion." The Pet Care section consists of numerous articles covering areas such as travelling with pets, pets and babies, spaying and neutering, and coping with the loss of a pet.

The Dumb Friends League: helpful tips and information
The Dumb Friends League is an animal shelter operating in Colorado since 1910. Included on their Website is information about the organisation, pet care information such as selecting the right pet, cat and dog behaviour and seasonal pet care tips. Also included are education, news and a kids section as well as links to other shelters and humane societies.

Mar Vista Animal Medical Center
The Center provides pet care and education services for its clients, the general community and undergraduates. The site has been produced and is maintained by a number of staff at the Center. The Website is divided into four main sections: a 'Surgery suite', 'Pet Web Library', 'Pharmacy Center' and Vaccine mezzanine'. The surgery suite provides information and treatment on a variety of health conditions affecting cats and dogs. The pet web Library provides information on common medical pet problems of cats and dogs. The Pharmacy Center contains a listing of commonly prescribed medications arranged by both brand and generic names. The Vaccine mezzanine provides information about diseases, general information about vaccines and frequently asked questions (FAQ's) as well as the hospital's vaccination policy. As this Website includes animated graphics, sounds and interactivity the SHOCKWAVE plug-in will be needed instructions for downloading this plug-in are included on the site.

Caring For Pets With Cancer
These lecture notes and information for veterinarians on caring for pets with cancer have been written by Kevin A. Hahn, D.V.M., Ph D., Diplomate A.C.V.I.M. from Gulf Coast Veterinary Oncology. Included is information on dealing with pets with cancer, which includes diagnosis of the disease, treatment options, which includes alternative medicine and drug resistance.

Natural Holistic Health Care
This site includes information about homeopathy, acupuncture, chiropractic, nutritionin veterinary medicine, and is run by Dr Larry Bernstein, a holistic veterinarian. Included are links to related Websites, recommended reading, current AVMA Guidelines on alternative medicine and to listings for Academy of Veterinary Homeopathy and other holistic veterinarians.

PET Health Care
This site is a commercial Website developed by Pet Healthcare Services Limited in the United Kingdom and published by Citrus Publishing. The information provided has been compiled by qualified veterinarians and covers the care, maintenance and understanding of companion animals, in particular cats and dogs.

Bergenline Animal Hospital: tips & info
This site is published by the Bergenline Animal Hospital. It includes links to dog and cat care tips, which discuss preventative health care and vaccination programs for your cat and dog. Also included are links to an article on dental care, to information about the Animal Hospital and its services and to an "ask the doctor" service.

The Pet Doctor
Dr. Lester Mandelker a Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners is 'the pet doctor' and he practices at the Community Veterinary Hospital in Florida. Dr Mandelker can be contacted by email through 'ask the pet doctor', which is a fee based service. Dr. Mandelker also consults with other veterinary specialists online about complex cases through the Veterinary Information Network (VIN). The Pet Doctor Website was designed by Faulkner and Associates and was copyrighted in 1998 by the Community Veterinary Hospital. It provides links to topics on pet health for cats and dogs, alternative remedies and to the Community Veterinary Hospital.

This site is provided by Dr. Race Foster (DVM) and Dr. Marty Smith's (DVM) Animal Hospital in Rhindlander, Wisconsin. Up to date information written by the veterinarians at the Animal Hospital on pet care for dog and cat owners is included. Hundreds of articles on feeding and nutrition, choosing a new dog/new puppy, behavior and training, disease information, responsible dog/puppy/cat ownership and preventative care including health care, grooming and sanitation and supplies are included. Information on vet & lab procedures, drugs & nutraceuticals, alternative & holistic medicine, human-animal bond and cases from the clinic are also included. This site provides interactive pet care infomation for children in Kindergarten and grades 1 and 2. It is hosted by Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Flash Player is needed to run the interactive components.

A Guide to Pet Care for the Immunocompromised
An Ohio State University fact sheet. This sheet covers basic information for people at a higher risk of disease to enable them to choose and keep a pet.

Animal Pet Doctor
This site is aimed at pet owners with the intention of informing them about what will happen when they take their pets to the vet. Veterinary terminology and procedures are explained in clear language. There is also general pet care information. The site also discusses animal rights, and regulations covering pet ownership in the United States.

The Pet Center, the Internet Pet Hospital
This virtual veterinary clinic is owned and operated by PetFoodDirect.com. Pet owners have the opportunity to see some of the "behind the scenes" in animal surgery as well having access to comprehensive pet care information through an article library. T.J. Dunn, Jr. DVM USA and the ten other licensed veterinarians provide answers to questions about the health and well being of pet dogs and cats seven days a week through 'ask the vet online'.

This web site was founded by Dr. Jon Rappaport, an American small animal veterinary specialist, and is maintained by a team of veterinarians. The bird section features many articles on bird care, cage maitenance, health issues, behaviour, and feeding. Many types of birds are covered including budgies, canaries and parrots and cockatoos.

PetNet - The Budgerigar Page
This web page is part of the PetNet website hosted by the Petcare Information and Advisory Service Australia Pty Ltd (PIAS). It features a series of articles covering topics such as choosing a budgie, housing, nutrition, breeding, and health. Pages on canaries and other birds will follow.

Petalia: Birds
The Petalia website is published by Provet Holdings Ltd an Australian based veterinary distributor. The bird section of its website features on collection of articles on birds and poultry. Cat Care
This Web site is published by the New Zealand Veterinary Association and covers a variety of topics relating to the care of cats including diet, dental care, neutering, parasite control, skin and coat care, urine spraying and marking and vaccinations.

The Feline Advisory Bureau Information for cat owners
The Feline Advisory Bureau (FAB) is an organisation based in the United Kingdom dedicated to knowledge and veterinary care of the cat. Over 60 information sheets on a broad range of cat related issues can be accessed from this page. Listed titles include chlamydial infection in cats; feline leukaemia virus - FeLV; and euthanasia as well as other more general titles such as feline flea control and worming your cat.

Cornell Feline Health Center: Client Information Brochures
These brochures were published on the Web by the Cornell Feline Health Center, Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. "The ultimate purpose of the Feline Health Center is to improve the health of cats by developing methods to prevent or cure feline diseases and by providing continuing education to veterinarians and cat owners". The brochures provide important information on feline health care, infectious diseases and medical disorders. Topics covered are choosing and caring for your new cat which provides basic guidelines for vaccinations, nutrition and grooming, feeding and behaviour problems and caring for elderly or geriatric cats.

Caring for Cats
This Web site on caring for cats has been produced by the Cat Fanciers' Association. It provides advice on canine health including heartworm and obesity and focuses on the importance of regular check- ups. It also details what to expect from a physical examination performed by a veterinarian.

LIDA: Listing of Inherited Disorders in Animals
Published by the Faculty of Veterinary Science, University of Sydney, this resource is designed to "gather, collate and disseminate data on the prevalence of inherited disorders among Australian dogs". It is aimed at breeders, veterinarians and buyers of puppies. The database allows users to search inherited disorders by breed group or by organ system and provides details of disorders for each dog breed.

Dog Behaviour Index

Dog Owner's Guide
This Web page provides links to over 200 articles on a variety of topics which are copyrighted by Canis Major Publications, 2001. The articles originally appeared in the Dog Owner's Guide, the Cincinnati, Ohio, USA bimonthly canine newspaper for pet and show dog owners. Horse lore: basic information for the serious novice horseperson
Published by Acreage Equines, a riding school based in Alberta, Canada. The website provides information on equine behaviour and care, health issues, horseback riding and training, and equestrian tack and equipment.

Equiworld: Horse care
Published by Equiworld.net, a UK based equestrian resource. The horse care section of the site contains a series of articles covering areas such as anatomy, breeds, hoof care, diseases, grooming, housing, handling, and saddlery.

Your horses health
This website published by Bayer Corporation, features a collection of articles on equine health care. Subjects covered include: breeding and foaling, feeding, and lameness and disease. The site also has a "vet tip of the month" section archived back to August 2002.

Horse behavior and psychology
Published by the White Horse Equine Ethology Project, a small independent research centre. In addition to pages discussing psychology and behaviour there are also pages on the evolution of the horse, shoes and tack, breeds, and welfare issues.

Equine behaviour

The Shelter Workers' Guide to Pigs
A 32 page booklet published by PIGS, a sanctuary, a shelter and rescue centre for pigs. The book provides practical information on the housing, feeding, transportation, and health care of pigs. The organisation's website also has a All about pigs section with practical information on keeping pigs as pets.

Information aimed at owners of small poultry flocks published by the Mississippi State University Extension Service. Includes a general management guide for backyard flock owners, and information on breeds, brooding, diseases, incubation and hatching of eggs, and exhibiting poultry.

Poultry husbandry
Booklet written by Dr. Richard J. Julian and produced by the XXIIIrd World Veterinary Congress Foundation, Montreal Quebec. It is made available on the web by Canadian Poultry Consultants Ltd. The booklet focusses on the management of small poultry flocks, including backyard poultry, and discusses, feeding, brooding, diseases, hatching eggs, and incubation.

Poultry: small specialty flock
Collection of articles and factsheets written by poultry extension specialists at Virginia Cooperative Extension, Virginia State University covering many aspects of raising domestic poultry on a small scale. The information is particularly useful for small or part time farmers and hobbyists.

Rabbits and other rodents

House Rabbit Society
House Rabbit Society is a U.S. based all-volunteer, non-profit organisation that rescues rabbits and educates the public on rabbit care and behaviour. The site is divided into the subject areas of care, behaviour, and health. Some of the areas covered under these areas include: diet, litter training, housing, socialisation, aggression, diseases, and mental health. It also has a section aimed at vets with articles on specific diseases and medical concerns.

Ontario Rabbit Education Organization
The Ontario Rabbit Education Organization is a non-profit organisation, that promotes the health and well-being of domestic rabbits. The site is divided into sections covering diet and care, behaviour, and health. It includes articles on subjects such as grooming, housing, litter training, and neutering. The health section features articles on abscesses, gastrointestinal ailments, dental problems, and VHD. There are also some useful tips on children and rabbits.

Australian Rodent Fanciers Society - NSW
The Australian Rodent Fanciers Society (NSW) "seeks to encourage people who own rats and mice to house, and in particular, breed them responsibly". The care sheets section of the website provides useful and comprehensive information on most aspects of caring for rats and mice.

Spoiled Ratten Rattery-How to care for your rats.
This website published by E. Brooks (an experienced rat keeper who is not a veterinarian) gives detailed, easy to follow information on keeping rats as pets. Housing, nutrition, health and reproduction are covered and there are many photographs and links to other sites.

The American Fancy Rat and Mouse Association (AFRMA)
The AFRMA's aim is promoting and encouraging the breeding and exhibition of fancy rats and mice, educating the public on their positive qualities as companion animals and providing information on their proper care. The rat and mice information pages give useful information on general care and breeding and there are many links to other similar sites.

PetEducation.com - Small Pets
This webpage is part of the PetEducation.com website created and maintained by two American veterinarians, Dr. Race Foster and Dr. Marty Smith. The Small Pets section features articles on mice, rats, rabbits, guinea pigs, and hamsters. Topics discussed include choosing a pet, nutrition, behaviour and health.

Biology of the gerbil
This publication which is aimed at the general public has been developed and made available on the Web by the Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association. It is one in a series of educational publications. This resource describes the biology of gerbil and covers taxonomy, origin and habitat, uses, handling, anatomy and physiology, nutrition and reproduction. Also included is a list of diseases. The LVMA also hosts pages on the biology of the guinea pig, the hamster, the mouse, the rabbit and the rat.

Introduction to animal behaviour problems
This behaviour problems home page was written by Daniel Mills and forms part of the Lincoln University Web site. "It is designed to give people an introduction to the study of behavioural problems in Animals". Discussed are behavioural problems associated with companion animals from equine, canine, feline and exotic animal species and principles of treatment. The results from studies and statistics have been included. There are also links to other relevant Web sites included.

APBC: The Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors
This Web site is published and maintained by the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors (APBC). It is divided into five sections: main subject, articles, what's new, contact and links. The main subject section includes frequently asked questions (FAQ's), information about the Association and links to publication lists. Articles are written by members of the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors and their Associates and include topics relating to dogs, cats, rabbits and hamsters. The what's new section lists changes to the Web site. There are also links to other Web sites on animal behaviour and training.

Perfect Paws, Dog and Cat Behavior and Training Center
This Web site has been developed by Pet Paws Inc an American based company. It includes information on raising and training puppies and adult dogs as well as behaviour problems. Also included is information on training and behaviour problems in cats.

Pet Behavior Resources
This Web site is by William E. Campbell who is an internationally recognized authority on pet dog behavior problems and has written several publications on the topic. The Web site includes information on how dogs think, lists of publications on behaviour for dogs and horses and an index to the Pet behavior newsletter, a guide to selecting a behaviour consultant and information from past and present cases from William Campbell's files. Also included are links to other dog and pet behaviour Web sites.

Applied Ethology
This Web site was created by Dr. Joseph M. Stookey and Dr. Jon Watts from the Department of Herd Medicine and Theriogenology, Western College of Veterinary Medicine University of Saskatchewan, Canada and was last updated in 1999. It provides information on the behaviour of domestic animals and animals in captivity. Information sheets on behaviour problems in cats, dogs, horses, and other species are included, which have been written by veterinary medicine students. Also included are links to related Web sites, information about the International Society for Applied Ethology (ISAE) and abstracts from their meetings and articles and reports from the W.C.V.M. Behaviour Laboratory. Users also have access to an email discussion list and to the archives of the discussion group. The Web site also provides live videos on a variety of animals so that their behaviour can be observed.

Applied Animal Behavior
This site is by the Animal Behavior Society (ABS). It contains articles submitted by ABS certified applied animal behaviorists and focuses on cat behaviour problems such as housesoiling, scratching and how to introduce an adopted cat to a new household. There is a current directory of certified applied animal behaviorists provided and information about certification as well as links to other Websites, which have been submitted to the ABS.

The information provided is aimed at pet owners to give them an understanding of common behavioural problems of cats and dogs kept as pets or companion animals and some ways to change unacceptable behaviour. Included is urine spraying and scratching in cats and aggression and barking in dogs. The site also provides links to other pages on cat and dog care such as vaccinating, worming, feeding guides, desexing, grooming, external parasite control for fleas and ticks and training. Topics such as feline leukaemia, holiday and boarding options for pets and the rabbit calicivirus are also covered.

Companion Animal Behaviour Therapy Study Group (CABTSG)
The Companion Animal Behaviour Therapy Study Group was founded to "promote the study, practice and teaching of behaviour therapy in companion animals within a veterinary context." The site provides background information and membership details for the group as well as details of policy statements, events and courses. A primer on dog and cat behaviour has been provided under the 'Articles' heading which is aimed at vets and veterinary nurses - Adobe Acrobat Reader is required.

This Web site is the home page for the Waltham Centre for Pet Nutrition, which is "the world's leading authority on pet care and nutrition". This site provides links to information on the care of pet dogs, cats, fish, birds and horses. Some of the topics covered include selecting a pet, nutrition, care, feeding and behaviour. Each section has a search facility.

A commonsense guide to feeding your dog and cat
This booklet was published by The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) Pet Food Certification Committee. It discusses cat and dog nutrition and emphasizes the importance of a proper diet to the health of your pet.

Ophthalmology

Eyevet Consulting Services
The Veterinary Ophthalmology Information Centre is part of Eyevet Consulting Services, owned by Canadian veterinarian Dr. Michael Zigler D.V.M., Cert.V.Ophthal. This site is most useful for pet owners who have animals with eye problems, however it does contain some useful information on a variety of ophthalmalogical disorders in animals including cataracts, glaucoma, retinal dysplasia and iris melanoma. There is also a section on canine eye anatomy which has a labelled diagram.

Pets Need Dental Care, Too
This Web site has been published by Hill's Pet Nutrition, Inc and the information provided on oral health care for cats and dogs forms part of the 2001 'Dental care shouldn't be like pulling teeth' campaign. The aim of the campaign was to make pet owners aware of the importance of dental care in the overall health of their pet. It was partnered by the American Veterinary Medical Association, American Veterinary Dental Society, American Veterinary Dental College, The Academy of Veterinary Dentistry and Hill's Pet Nutrition, Inc. There are links provided to these organisations.

This site contains information about the tests and procedures necessary to import and export cats and dogs from Australia. It outlines the procedures for submitting blood samples to the CSIRO's Australian Animal Health Laboratory.

Bringing pets to Britain : how to bring your pet cat or dog into the UK
Part of the UK Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF) animal health pages, this site provides detailed information about The Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) which allows the movement of dogs and cats into the UK without the necessity of quarantine. The scheme is explained, with procedures for vets and pet owners outlined. There is also an online self-assesment form where pet owners can find out if their pet is suitable for the Pet Travel Scheme. Information about quarantine, including procedures, a map of quarantine premises and welfare in quarantine is also included.
