Learning reproduction in farm animals Created by Dr. Rodney D. Geisert of the Department of Animal Science, Oklahoma State University. This resource was developed to assist students in obtaining a basic knowledge of reproductive physiology in farm species. It includes illustrated lecture notes, a laboratory slide collection, video, and animation.
Recent advances in small animal reproduction Edited by P. W. Concannon et al. and published by International Veterinary Information Service, Ithaca NY, 2003. This is an electronic book featuring chapters covering many aspects of canine and feline reproduction. Users need to register with IVIS to access the site. Registration is free.
Reproductive Biology and Endocrinology This is a open access electronic journal published by BioMed Central. The journal scope is listed as follows - "gametogenesis, fertilization, early embryonic development, control of reproduction, reproductive immunology, neuroendocrinology, and veterinary and human reproductive medicine (except Case Reports)."
Virtual Embryo This site aims to collate electronic resources and provide students and researchers with access to current information and images about developmental biology. It is put together by Leon W. Browder of the University of Calgary. The site includes a Dynamic Development teaching resource which provides enrichment for students on topics in developmental biology and excellent supplementary lecture material and textbook reading assignments.
Theriogenology Collection of resources authored by Rob Lofstedt, Professor of Theriogenology, Atlantic Veterinary College, University of Prince Edward Island. Articles cover various aspects of equine and canine reproduction including physiology, use of hormones, and artificial insemination.
Bill Wasserman's Home Page This is the home page of Associate Professor Bill Wasserman, PhD. of the Department of Biology, Loyola University of Chicago. The developmental biology page has links to pictures, movies and animations of developmental processes in a range of species including amphibians, insects, mammals and birds. There are also links to other developmental biology web resources and journals.
Zygote This is an online resource that aims to "provide materials to supplement and enrich courses in developmental biology". It was created by Scott Gilbert at the Department of Biology, Swarthmore College, Swarthmore, PA to supplement his Developmental Biology textbook. Information is organised under 23 general topics such as fertilisation, gastrulation, genetic and cellular approaches etc. These in turn take you to a number of related pages which may contain essays, papers, or movies.
Welcome to the Dynamics of Development This is a series of web pages that presents modules on the developmental biology of fish, amphibians and echinoderms. It was created by Jeff Hardin at the University of Wisconsin-Madison as a supplement to undergraduate courses in animal development. The stages of embryogenesis in each organism are investigated including fertilisation, cleavage, gastrulation, and neurulation. Information is conveyed by text, pictures, movies and diagrams.
UNSW Embryology Developed by Dr. Mark Hill at the School of Anatomy, University of New South Wales, this site covers early development, systematic development, developmental abnormalities and molecular mechanisms, primarily in humans. Carnegie stage serial sections of pig and human embryos are also available.
Developmental Biology Online This site was developed by Dr. Steven Scadding and Sandra K. Ackerley as supplemental material for a Developmental Biology course at the University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada. Features of this site include discussions of anatomical terms and planes of section, gametogenesis, cleavage, gastrulation, frog and chick embryos, histology, regeneration, slide presentations, and glossary. The pages are image-rich with labelled cross sections of frog and chick embryos, many informative diagrams, microscope pictures and magnifications.
Development The online version of this peer reviewed research journal dedicated to mechanisms of plant and animal development has some full text articles available free of charge. Access is by browsing the back issues. It is published twice monthly.
Comparative Placentation Authored by Kurt Benirschke MD, this is a vast website "created to assist with the examination and evaluation of the many different types of mammalian placentas." It consists of descriptions, diagrams and images of a wide variety of placentas as well as a glossary.
The Edinburgh Mouse Atlas Project A collaborative project between the MRC Human Genetics Unit, Edinburgh and the Department of Anatomy, University of Edinburgh, this website is intended as a digital atlas of mouse development and a database of gene expression. 3D images and movies of mouse development are used to build a digital model of each stage of mouse development.
Pathology of the Reproductive Tract
Diseases of the Female Reproductive Tract Authored by C.D.Buergelt, DVM, C.L.Davis Foundation, Gross and Morbid Pathology, this article is a concise review of female reproductive tract diseases. Subjects discussed include: female tract anomalies; ovarian cysts and tumours; inflammation; uterine injury and endometrial biopsy.
Pathology of Male Reproductive Tract
Authored by C.D.Buergelt, DVM, C.L.Davis Foundation,
Gross and Morbid Pathology, this article is an overview of the male reproductive tract. Subjects discussed include: the spermatogenic cycle; morphology and diseases of testes; testicular degeneration; testicular hypoplasia; semen analysis and penile neoplasms.
Reproduction images
International Image Database of Human Reproductive Biology
Published by IVF.net, the image database is designed as an educational resource. It provides access to colour images grouped by category, for example, sperm, cryopreservation and blastocysts.
Histology of the Mouse embryo This site is provided by Muritech Innovation in BiotechnologyServices. It contains a number of slide images of embryonic mice at different stages of development.
Bovine Theriogenology Images This Web site created by Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine is a vast library of bovine theriogenology images. Subjects covered include artificial insemination, bovine obstetrics, ovarian structures, parturition and postpartum images.
Embryo Images: Normal and Abnormal Mammalian Development
This is a tutorial published by the Educational Technology Group that uses scanning electron micrographs (SEMs), primarily of mouse embryos, as the primary resource to teach mammalian embryology. The tutorial is divided into units such as the nervous system, the cardiovascular system, and the urogenital system.
Magnetic resonance imaging of embryos The use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to investigate the internal and external anatomy of embryos is discussed here. An overview of embryo MRI is given, as well as sample images and movies of animal embryos. This site was developed by Dr Bradley R. Smith, Director, Medical and Biological Illustration, University of Michigan.
Developmental Biology Cinema Published on the web by the Society for Developmental Biology, this is an online educational resource that provides digitised video sequences of developing embryos and experimental techniques. Movie titles include Fly morph-o-genesis, Calcium tsunami, Dynamics of thin filopodia and Quail-chick chimeras. Each of these is comprised of a series of short QuickTime movie sequences and some have larger versions available to download for educational use.
Fertility
