AHA: Johne's Disease
Part of the Animal Health Australia website. The site gives information about the diagnosis, management and control of Johne's disease and details of Johne's disease control programs in Australia. These include the National Ovine Johne's Disease Control and Evaluation Program (NOJDP) and Market assurance Programs (MAPS)

Scrapie Information
Produced by the United States Department of Agriculture Veterinary Service, this site includes a fact sheet on scrapie, a video showing clinical signs, and a slide show. Although Australia and New Zealand are recognised as being free of scrapie, this site is useful for any veterinary or animal scientists planning to practice overseas.

Anthelmintic resistance
Published by CSIRO this is the full text of SCARM Technical Report No. 28. Report of the Working Party for the Animal Health Committee of the Standing Committee on Agriculture. The report discusses anthelmintic resistance in nematode parasites of sheep in Australia. The report is in .pdf format and a little slow to download.

Sheep: Disease Information
This site, by Merial information about sheep diseases. It divides the endoparasites and ectoparasites into their constituent groups, and looks at their biology, damage to the host and control issues.

AUSVETPLAN: Disease strategies
"AUSVETPLAN is a series of technical response plans that describe the proposed Australian approach to an exotic disease incursion". These are published for a series of diseases on the Animal Health Australia website. The plans provide details of the nature of the disease and principles of control and eradication.

National Animal Health Monitoring System: Sheep studies
"NAHMS sheep studies provide an overview of sheep health, productivity, and management on U.S. sheep operations as well as information on animal health concerns identified by producers, industry allies, Federal and State agencies, and researchers.". Topics covered include: scrapie, feedlot health and management, ovine progressive pneumonia, and biosecurity. Includes results of Sheep 2001, an extensive study on the US sheep industry.

Heartwater
This fact sheet outlines the history, symptoms, transmission and diagnosis of heartwater, a tick-born disease of ruminants. It also gives suggestions for control measures as reccommended by the United States Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.

Screwworm
This fact sheet gives basic information on screwworm, an insect that, in its larval stage, lives in the open wounds of livestock. It also talks about he US Screwworm Eradication Program, coordinated by the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.

Wool Residue Update
Wool Residue Update is a news letter from the Integrated Pest Management (Wool Residues) Unit, attached to Western Australia Agriculture. Australian Sheep Gene Mapping Web Site
This database is maintained by Jill Maddox of the Centre for Animal Biotechnology. It includes sheep markers, sheep maps and comparisons of sheep versus bovine, goat and human maps.

Sheep Genetics Australia
Sheep Genetics Australia is a national genetic information and evaluation service for the meat and wool sectors of the sheep industry and has been developed jointly by Australian Wool Innovation Limited (AWI) and Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA), together with industry. The site provides access to the LAMBPLAN and MERINOSELECT databases.

Sheep genome resources
Website hosted by the National Center for Biotechnology Information provides access to a collection of sheep genome resources. Includes an interactive viewer for genome maps, sequences, and genes.

UK Sheep Genome Mapping Project
"The project aims to apply genome mapping research to sheep, utilising previous research in sheep (in other countries) and in other species (in the UK and abroad) to the benefit of the UK sheep industry". The site publishes the results of research as well as providing links to other sheep genome publications.

USDA Sheep Genome Mapping Project
Publishes results of a project by US Department of Agriculture Meat Animal Research Center including linkage maps and marker tables. The site also allows the user to search the database for markers by name.

ARK database - Sheep
"The ARKdb database system provides comprehensive public repositories for genome mapping data from farmed and other animal species, providing a resource similar in function to that offered by GDB or MGD for human or mouse mapping data respectively. Data stored includes details of loci and markers, references/papers, authors, genetic linkage map assignments, cytogenetic map assignments, experimental techniques, PCR primers and conditions and any other data pertaining to genome mapping." The database can be accessed by locus/marker, by published reference or by map.

OXGRID - Sheep
Part of the Oxford Grid Project, this site is part of the Medvet and OMIA projects and is hosted by ANGIS. The site shows comparisons between the genome of sheep and other animals.

Breeds of livestock - Sheep
Part of the Oklahoma State University's Breeds of Livestock site, this page is an alphabetic index of sheep breeds. Each entry on a breed has a short descriptive article, a list of further references, and images of the sheep breed.

Sheep breeds in Australia
Part of the Australian Wool Innovation website. Gives a brief description of each Australian sheep breed.

New Zealand sheep breeds
Part of the New Zealand Sheepbreeders' Association website. Provides a list of New Zealand sheep breeds. Each entry contains an image and details about the origin and history of that breed, along with a description and classification.

Feeding Sheep
This fact sheet discusses many aspects of nutrition in sheep, including feeding ewes, lambs and rams. Information relating to types of feed, such as pasture, hay, silage, grain and alternative feeds is also provided. Vitamins, minerals, additives and water are also discussed. The site is authored by Extension animal scientist Steven H. Umberger, and published on the web by Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE), a joint educational outreach program of Virginia Tech, Virginia State University and the US Department of Agriculture.

Nutrient Requirements of Sheep, Sixth Revised Edition, 1985
Published by the National Academy Press, this is a book produced by the US National Research Council Committee on Animal Nutrition. The full-text of this book is freely available online, and can be browsed by chapter or searched by keyword. This book looks at recent research in nutrition requirements for all phases of lamb and wool production. These have been incorporated into tables of energy requirements and feed formulas in both metric and English measurements. In addition, practical husbandry information and descriptions of nutritional deficiencies are supplemented by an extensive bibliography.
