AV Materials from Selected University of Sydney Library Collections
AV materials from other Libraries in the system may be found using a keyword search and choosing the material type required. Not all of the titles on the lists below will be in veterinary or animal science subject areas.
Image Collections
O.L.I.V.E.R.
O.L.I.V.E.R. was created by the Faculty of Veterinary Science, the University Library and the Department of Medical Education at the University of Sydney. O.L.I.V.E.R. is a database that enables staff and students of the University of Sydney to find, view and download learning objects, such as images and videoclips for learning, teaching and research purposes. Files include images of animals in health and disease, husbandry techniques, radiographs, surgical methods and graphs of experimental data. Staff in the Faculty of Veterinary Science have contributed most of the images. Additionally, students and commercial partners have generously donated some outstanding graphic materials. O.L.I.V.E.R. is currently undergoing a second stage of development to allow more precise searching of the fast-growing database. Please check the help information for tips on searching O.L.I.V.E.R. effectively. Staff and students of the University of Sydney are required to use their Extro or Unikey password to log into the database as access is currently restricted to this group.
Image database Published by the College of Veterinary Medicine, Washington State University. The database can be searched by subject type, discipline, organ/organ system, or disease type. The images in this data base are for educational, non-commercial use only.
Bristol Biomedical Image Archive
This site provides access to collection of medical, dental and veterinary images for use in teaching. For full access to the BioMed image collections, registration is required. To register, you will need an email address, without a password, only smaller thumbnail images are
accessible. Please consult the privacy and usage rules page for information on intellectual property and costs associated with the images.
Public Health Image Library (PHILTM)
Created by a Working Group at the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC), PHILTM offers an electronic gateway to CDC's image collections. CDC welcomes "public health professionals, the media, laboratory scientists, educators, and the worldwide public to use this material for reference, teaching, presentation, and public health messages. The content is organised into hierarchical categories of people, places, and
science, and is presented as single images, image sets, and multimedia files".
Science Image Online
Produced by the CSIRO, Australia, this site provides access to images by keyword, subject or research area. Images are watermarked and it is necessary to select the appropriate user license to download them from the site. Check pricing and conditions for information about fees and licenses.
WWF-Canon Photogallery
Produced by the World Wildlife Fund, this page gives access to a wide range of images of wildlife from all over the world. Please note that all photos, graphics and images on this site remain the copyright of WWF and should not be downloaded without prior agreement.
Iowa State Entomology Image Gallery
Contains images of a range of North American insects including agriculturally important insects. Please check the Image Usage Policy page before using these images.
IVF.net Image Database
Published by IVF.net, the image database is designed as an educational resource. It provides access to over 100 colour images grouped by category, for example, sperm, cryopreservation and blastocysts.
Veterinary Clinical Parasitology Images
Developed by Professor J. Carl Fox of the College of Veterinary Medicine, Oklahoma State University, this site is intended as an online parasitology resource for veterinarian training and education. The site is comprised of approximately 350 images, predominantly microscope slide images, of various nematodes, protozoans and other parasites. The images illustrate elements such as morphology, internal features, lifecycle stages, histopath sections, eggs, larvae and infection of animal cells. Images are grouped by diagnostic stage, parasite and in eight separate galleries. There are also some lecture slides available.
School of Veterinary Medicine Traditional Medical Illustration Archive
Professor David J. Williams heads the School of Veterinary Medicine; Traditional Medical Illustration Department at Purdue University and much of the artwork featured in the Archive has been completed by him. Artwork from 1999 onwards by other staff and past and present graduate students is also shown. All the artwork, sculptures, paintings and diagrams, are copyrighted and permission is required when using or downloading any work. Some of the subject matter includes the facial anatomy of the dog, flow transducers on the equine heart and the electrical field in amphibian limbs.
Electron micrographs of animal viruses
This presentation of images has been provided by Prof. Stewart McNulty, Veterinary Sciences Division at The Queen's University of Belfast. A variety of format options to view images have been included. Currently there are images for 18 different viruses including: poxvirus, herpesvirus, adenovirus and adeno-associated viruses, papillomavirus, parvovirus, reovirus, rotavirus, birnavirus, coronavirus, influenza, paramyxovirus, pneumovirus, picornavirus, astrovirus, circovirus, calicivirus and torovirus. It is proposed that more images will be added in the future. Also included on the website are links to other sources of electron micrographs on the Internet.

Free farm animal clipart, animated GIFS, backgrounds, borders and web page graphics. Also included on the website are links to other free clipart on topics such as birds, dogs, cats etc and to related sites.
Washington State University, College of Veterinary Medicine: Image Database
This image database from Washington State University, College of Veterinary Medicine shows both normal animals and animals with naturally occurring diseases. An image filter is provided to prevent accidental viewing of graphic images, as many of the images are intended for use by animal health care students and professionals. Users can search by keyword, type of image or animal type. The number of images shown at any one time can be limited. Several criteria can be combined and a help section is provided. The images in this data base are for educational, non-commercial use only. This Website by the Department of Animal Science, Oklahoma State University provides background information on various species of chickens, geese, ducks and turkeys as well as links to information on guinea fowl and black swans. Access is also provided to some full-text online poultry publications, which is in PDF format so the Adobe Acrobat Reader will be required. Other publications can be obtained directly from the Department of Animal Science.

Historical livestock gallery Hosted by Massey University, New Zealand, this website is a collection of images primarily from the collection of Dr F.W. Dry - a foundation lecturer at Massey Agricultural College - as it was then called. Many of the images date from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. There are galleries featuring sheep, cattle, wool, machinery, and rural images.
Environment Australia's Online Image Database This image database has been developed by Environment Australia to provide the community with access to its photographic collection. The images are copyright cleared and available free of charge for use by the media, students and industry organisations (but not for use in advertising or other commercial purposes). The database features a search engine that allows the user to search by keyword and refine the search by thesaurus terms and geographical location.
BBID-Biological Biochemical Image Database A searchable database of images of biological pathways, macromolecular structures, gene families, and cellular relationships. It is run by the Gerontology Research Center, National Institute on Aging, and is useful for those working with large sets of genes or proteins.
Digital Dragonfly Museum A selection of images from the entomology program based at the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station in Stephenville. The images are sorted by species and by photographer. There is also a series of photographs showing a dragonfly emerging from the pupa, and links to other entomology sites.
A Photographic Catalog of North American Arthropods An extensive catalog of digital images of living and unposed insects and spiders. Collected by Bruce Marlin at Cirrus Digital Imaging, the collection is arranged by taxon, with scientific and common names.
FaganFinder - Image search engines Created by Michael Fagan, this website features numerous search tools and external links. Users can search for images, video and audio files.
singingfish Singingfish is a multimedia search engine. It is designed to track audio and video files. The advanced search option allows the user to search by subject area and/or file type.
ARKive ARKive is a digital library of images and other resources about endangered animal and plant species. The aim of ARKive is to "compile an audio-visual record, where possible, for the 11,000 animals and plants threatened with extinction, according to the World Conservation Union's (IUCN) Red Lists of Threatened Species." ARKive provides information for both the academic community and the general public.
Mammal Species of the World (MSW) A database of mammalian taxonomy run by the Department of Systematic biology and the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. The database is searchable by both scientific and common names, or by browsing the taxonomic hierarchy. Some records have images attached.
PictureAustralia The PictureAustralia database is published by the National Library of Australia. The database allows the user to "search for people, places and events in the collections of libraries, museums, galleries, archives, universities and other cultural agencies, in Australia and abroad - all at the same time."
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service: Digital Library System An online digital media library containing the National Image Library, the Service's collection of public domain still photos. The system can be searched by keyword or by advanced search for more specific searching.

Guide to Animal Sounds on the Net
This page provides access to a wide range of animal sound files including those of birds, mammals, frogs and toads, crocodiles, lizards and snakes, fish, and insects. There is no author or organisation mentioned on this page.
Sounds of the World's Animals
This site is sponsored by the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics at Georgetown University, USA, it contains a range of links to words used to describe animal sounds around the world. It does not contain sound files.
Find Sounds
A search engine for finding sound effects and sample sounds on the web. A help page is available for more information about searching, which includes details of searchable file formats.
National Sound Archive Catalogue
A searchable online catalogue of almost 2.5 million sound recordings held by the British Library National Sound Archive (NSA). The collection ranges from pop music to kookaburra's and many have detailed summaries. Information for placing orders for copies is included and there are copyright fees for downloads.
