Created by Dr. William J. Donawick, this site is part of the Computer Aided Learning project at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, America. This site is an introduction to the principles of surgery and includes sections on surgical instruments, preparing equipment for surgery, preparing the patients for surgery, preparing the surgeon for surgery, and sutures and suture handling. A list of outside reading resources and other links is also provided.

The Veterinarian's Suture Guide
This site is dedicated to the practical application of sutures in veterinarian surgery. Aspects discussed include classification, suture needles, history, production and breaking strength and tissue handling. Online multiple choice application tests are also available. This site is authored by Dr. R.A. Henderson and published by the College of Veterinary Medicine Auburn University, Alabama.

Small animal surgery

Small Animal Cardiac Surgery Home
This site is part of the Computer Aided Learning project at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, America. The site deals with surgical treatment of common cardiac defects. It is intended to help students review the procedures involved in surgically treating these conditions. The pictures and video clips contained within this site are from a series of instructional videos created by Dr. James W. Buchanan, a Professor of Cardiology and former cardiac surgeon at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. This site is best viewed with Internet Explorer version 5.5 or higher with a browser size of 1024 x 768 (fully maximized).

Surgical management of the patient with upper airway disease (small animal)
Written by Caroline Prymak (BVSc(Hons), CertVR, MBA, MRCVS, DSAS, DipACVS, DipECVS) a practicing specialist in small animal surgery, this is a full text, PDF article aimed at veterinary surgeons. The paper discusses the respiratory system of small mammals (mainly dogs and cats), outlines various common upper airway diseases and their surgical management. Diseases mentioned include, brachycephalic airway syndrome, stenotic nares, elongated soft palate, redundant pharyngeal mucosa and laryngeal collapse.

Textbook of Small Animal Orthopaedics
This site is part of the Computer Aided Learning project at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, America. This particular project contains the contents of the Textbook of Small Animal Orthopaedics written by Charles D. Newton, D.V.M., M.S. and David M. Nunamaker, V.M.D. The textbook was published by J.B. Lippincott Company in 1985.

Principles of Aseptic Rodent Survival Surgery: General Training in Rodent Survival Surgery - Part I
Chapter by P. A. Brown and S. Hoogstraten-Miller from Laboratory Animal Medicine and Management, edited by J. D. Reuter and M. A. Suckow published by International Veterinary Information Service, Ithaca NY (2004). Principles of Aseptic Rodent Survival Surgery: General Training in Rodent Survival Surgery - Part II is also available. Users must resister with IVIS to gain access to materials. Registration is simple and free.

The site contains thirteen chapters covering a wide range of topics in large animal surgery, including: wound management and, bovine digestive system, equine digestive tract, equine respiratory system, anatomy, testicular degeneration, and urogenital surgery, hernia repair.


Organisations and associatons

Association of Veterinary Soft Tissue Surgeons
This site is the home page of the Association of Veterinary Soft Tissue Surgeons. The aims of the Association are to "promote the study and development of veterinary soft tissue surgery in all species". Membership is open to all members of the veterinary and medical professions, including veterinary nurses and students. Included on the site is information about the association, links to their proceedings and meeting notes, as well as links to related sites on the Internet.

The European College of Veterinary Surgeons Information Centre
The European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS) is a non-profit educational organization, the objective of which is the "advancement of the art and science of veterinary surgery". The website provides information about the organization, it's objectives, meetings, committees and members. Brochures, forms and other information concerning continuing education and training are also provided.

American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS)
The American College of Veterinary Surgeons is the American Veterinary Medical Association specialty board that sets the standards for advanced professionalism in veterinary surgery. This site is the home page of the ACVS. As well as information about the College, upcoming meetings and news, the site includes a searchable database of veterinarians accredited by the College.
