Library Information for Educational Partners

To assist our Extramural Supervisors in their role as educators of final year veterinary students (interns), the Faculty of Veterinary Science in conjunction with The University of Sydney Library, provides Educational Partners with access to library resources. The period of access covers two rotations: one rotation prior to the intern placement and the other continuing for the duration of the intern placement.

This page is designed to give you some basic information to help you search for and access library resources. For further information contact your Faculty Liaison Librarians.

Finding Books

To find books on a given topic, begin with a keyword search in the library catalogue. Request books to be sent to you via the Document Delivery service.

Finding Journal Articles

Journal articles are an important source of information, especially:

• up-to-date information
• specialised research
• new research

If you want to find journal articles on a given subject search for them in research databases. If you have a reference for a specific journal article then use the library catalogue to access it.

Using Research Databases

Each of the research databases covers a number of journals and a specific range of subject areas. It is always best to check more than one database to get a broad coverage of your topic.
Off-campus access to library databases requires authentication with your library barcode and name.

• Medline : Primarily a human biomedical database with some veterinary/animal content.
• CAB Abstracts: Emphasis on animals that are agriculturally or economically important.
• Zoological Record: Emphasis on zoo animals and exotic species, and Australian Native species.

Some important things to consider when using databases:

• The Library's bibliographic databases retrieve the best results if you plan your search strategy carefully.
• The learning tool: Search smarter, search faster will help you with searching.

Find the full text of an article

If you have a citation or reference and you want to find the full text of the article, search the University of Sydney Library catalogue for the title of the journal: Journal search

Document Delivery Service

Much of what you will need will be available electronically. However, if there is a journal article or a book that you need (and it is not available electronically) you can use the Library's Document Delivery Service.
